HIDALGO, Texas — The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (8-2) defeated the Salt Lake City Stars (2-9) 121-116, as the Vipers scored 37 points in the fourth quarter and held off the Stars.
JP Tokoto and Gary Payton II both finished the game with 20 points in the game. Chinanu Onuaku had a double-double, scoring 15 points and collecting 13 rebounds. Salt Lake City’s Marcus Paige and Sundiata Gaines led both teams with 21 points in the game.
The Vipers got off to a great start and went on a 8-0 run to start the game. JP Tokoto finished the quarter with seven points to give the Vipers a 29-18 lead over the Salt Lake City Stars to finish the opening quarter. RGV shot at a fifty percent from beyond the three-point line.
Salt Lake City improved their shooting in the second. After shooting at a 28.6 percent, the Stars finished the first half with a 47.6 shooting. Stars’ Sundiata Gaines scored eight points in the second quarter to cut the home team’s lead to single digits which left the score 58-50 at half time.
The game had its first lead change in the third quarter. Jeremy Williams’ layup gave the away team the lead with 5:08 remaining in the third. The Vipers came back and finished the third quarter on top 84-80. The Vipers scored 37 points in the final quarter to hold on and get the win. The final quarter had four lead changes. RGV’s Chinanu Onuaku had 10 points in the final quarter to finish off his tally of 15 points in the game.
