Hidalgo, Texas, January 6, 2017 – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (14-8), NBA D-League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, defeated Austin Spurs (8-12) 126-118. The Vipers held the lead throughout the entirety of the game.
Vipers’ JP Tokoto led RGV in scoring with 28 points, a season-high for him. Chris Johnson had a double-double on the night with 22 points and 12 assists. Vipers shot at a 51.3 percent from the court. Dejounte Murray, on assignment from the San Antonio Spurs, led Austin with 25 points.
The game commenced with an 11-0 start for the RGV Vipers. Dejounte Murray ended the Vipers’ run with a two-point jumper. Gary Payton II reached double digit scoring in the first quarter with 10 points. With six three-pointers in the first quarter, the Vipers finished on top of the Spurs 35-24 and held a 16-point lead at one point.
RGV’s JP Tokoto got the hot hand in the second quarter scoring eight points in the quarter. The Vipers shot at a 54.5% the first half to give the home team a 67-52 lead over the Austin Spurs.
Chris Johnson, with 11 points, and Tokoto, with 10 points, added to the scoring tally in the third quarter. The Vipers held a 25-point lead over the Austin Spurs at one point during the quarter. The Spurs were able to claw back and cut the deficit, finishing the quarter down by 10 points 95-85.
The Austin Spurs were able to cut down the Vipers’ lead to three points. The home team used an 11-4 run to get back the double-digit lead. After exchanging buckets throughout the remainder of the game, the Vipers secured the 126-118 win.
Rio Grande Valley returns to the State Farm Arena on Monday, January 9 to play Santa Cruz Warriors. Tip-off for the game is set at 7p.m.
