Hidalgo, Texas – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (18-13) defeated Sioux Falls Skyforce (20-11) in the dying seconds of the game by a score of 129-124. Darius Morris finished the game with 30 points.
RGV’s Darius Morris was the leading scorer for both teams on the night. Gary Payton II had a double-double on the night with 12 rebounds and 16 points. Keith Benson was the leading scorer for the Skyforce with 29 points.
Gary Payton II started things off for the RGV Vipers. Payton II scored nine points in the opening quarter to help the home team gain separation from Sioux Falls. Isaiah Taylor checked into the game, making his first appearance since November 26. The Vipers outscored Skyforce 30-22 in the first quarter and held a 13-point lead at one point.
Sioux Fall’s Weber found the net in the second quarter after being held scoreless in the first by the Vipers defense. Darius Morris and JP Tokoto both scored six points in the second quarter and helped the Vipers hold on to the lead 64-55 at half.
Sioux Falls would come back big in the third quarter, putting up 40 points. Bubu Palo had 10 points in the third. A Henry Walker three-pointer as time expired gave Sioux Falls the lead for the first time since the opening quarter. Skyforce led the Vipers 93-95.
After being behind by nine points, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers came back and made it interesting. Kyle Wiltjer’s three-pointer with 1:43 left in the game tied the game up. After Sioux Falls took another lead, Chinanu Onuaku scored a lay-up and tied the game up with 51.7 seconds left. Darius Morris would step up to the line a total of six times in final seconds of the game and sunk all six of shots to give the Vipers a 129-124 win.
