HIDALGO, Texas — The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (24-15), NBA D-League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, defeated the Long Island Nets (14-27) in the first- ever encounter between the two teams.
Long Island Nets’ Cliff Alexander led both teams in scoring with 30 points. Chinanu Onuaku led the home team with 24 points. Darius Morris had nine assists coming off the bench.
On his first game back for the Vipers, Chris Johnson gave the Vipers an advantage scoring off the bench. Johnson scored eight in the opening quarter to give the home team a 34-32 lead over the Long Island Nets. RJ Hunter had 11 in the quarter to keep it close.
The bench became an important component for the Nets’ offense as well. Cliff Alexander scored 10 and Trahson Burrell scored eight to send both teams even at 64.
The Vipers started to find separation into the third quarter. Chinanu Onuaku scored eight points in the third as Isaiah Taylor added another eight to outscore the Nets 23-17 on the third quarter.
In the final minute of the game, Cliff Alexander had a dunk to tie the game. After Isaiah Taylor’s two-pointer, Chris Johnson’s free throws made it a two score lead. Chinanu Onuaku would steal the ball and set himself up for a self ally-oop to seal the game.
