HIDALGO, Texas — The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (28-16), NBA D-League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, held on to defeat the Northern Arizona Suns (21-23) on Friday night by a score of 124-116.
Troy Williams led the Vipers with 25 points. Chinanu Onuaku collected another double-double with 11 rebounds and 13 points. Josh Gray, coming off the bench, led both teams with 27 points.
Early in the game Northern Arizona was able to set the pace. The Suns’ Elijah Milsap scored eight points in the opening quarter, and the Vipers saw themselves trailing in the first quarter 24-28.
The Vipers’ Troy Williams found his rhythm in the second quarter. His nine points in the second helped RGV find the slim lead over Northern Arizona. Jaron Johnson got his first buckets in the game and added another eight points coming off the bench to end the half with the minimal lead of 60-59.
Darius Morris put a big performance in the third that propelled the Vipers’ offense. At one point, the Rio Grande Valley held a 22-point lead over the away team. The Suns would then go on a 11-0 run to cut the deficit to just 11 points. Troy Williams’ seven points in the final quarter helped the Vipers hold on to the 124-116 win.
