ERIE, Penn. — The Erie BayHawks (14-36) took down the Delaware 87ers (26-24) in a wire-to-wire victory Saturday night inside Erie Insurance Arena, 115-78. The contest marked both Erie and Delaware’s final game of the 2016-17 season.
The BayHawks started opened on a 25-10 run and extended their lead to 19 by the end of the first quarter. After 12 minutes of action, Delaware found themselves in a 19-point, 34-15, hole. The second quarter was much closer, as Erie outscored Delaware by only one point, 27-26. At the intermission, the BayHawks held a commanding 20-point, 61-41, lead.
Erie extended its lead to 23 points in the third quarter. Heading into the final quarter, the BayHawks held an 84-61 lead. Michael Lyons registered a double-double within the first three quarters, tallying 17 points and 11 rebounds in three quarters of play. The BayHawks reached a 31-point lead with 5:39 left in the game, behind a John Petrucelli layup, 102-71. Erie finished its season the same way it started, with a win. The BayHawks finished the 2016-17 season victorious, 115-78.
The BayHawks held a 58-29 advantage on the boards (+29). The 58 rebounds pulled down by Erie marked a season best. Defensively, the BayHawks held the 87ers to just 1-17 (.059) shooting from three-point territory.
Erie had seven players notch 10-plus points tonight (Shevon Thompson-21, Michael Lyons-17, TJ Price-15, John Petrucelli-13, Reggis Onwukamuche-12, Kalin Lucas-10 and Gabe York-10). Thompson registered a double-double with a game-high 21 points on 8-12 (.667) shooting and a game-high 12 rebounds (five offensive) in 24 minutes as a reserve.
Roscoe Smith finished with a team-high 18 points on 8-13 (.615) shooting from the field, a team-high seven rebounds and two steals in 29 minutes for Delaware. Shane Edwards contributed 17 points and four rebounds in 25 minutes of action.
