CANTON, Ohio — The Canton Charge (12-19), powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, fell to the Greensboro Swarm (10-21), 106-99 on Saturday night in front of 2,901 fans at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. Greensboro’s victory claims the season series, taking two out of three from the Charge.
One night after trailing by as many as 21 and forcing an overtime win, the Charge fell behind the Swarm by as many as 19 points late in the third quarter before rallying to trim the lead to just four points (90-86), with 3:29 remaining in the fourth. Swarm guard Marcus Paige scored 11 points in the last 1:16 to stave off the Charge comeback.
Greensboro controlled the paint, outrebounding the Charge 49-39. The Swarm’s 15 offensive rebounds lead to a 22-8 advantage in second chance points on the evening. Despite being held to 41% shooting from the field, the Swarm were the aggressors, connecting on 23-of-27 free throw attempts (85%).
Making his first start after a brief stint off the bench, Charge guard Marcus Thornton posted a game-high 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-10 from three point range. The rest of the home team shot just 5-of-25 from three point distance.
Portland Trail Blazers’ assignee Caleb Swanigan recorded his ninth double-double of the season in 12 games played with 10 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes. Swanigan added a season-high four blocks to anchor the Charge defense. John Holland scored 11 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter. Cavaliers assignee Ante Zizic scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
Greensboro was paced by forward Roscoe Smith’s 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting in 33 minutes of action. Mangok Mathiang recorded a double-double for the Charlotte Hornets’ affiliate with 14 points and 11 rebounds off of the bench. Paige added 19 points and eight assists in 32 minutes.
