Maybe the most interesting story coming from the 2018 NBA G League Showcase is Myke Henry.
The versatile guard came into the Showcase as a member of the Oklahoma City Blue, played both games with the team, then the Memphis Grizzlies signed him to a two-way contract. So Saturday, he played in the Memphis Hustle’s final Showcase game.
Henry discussed where his emotions were after his first game with Memphis earlier Saturday.
“It is kind of surreal,” said Henry. “My emotions are all over the place. But when it is game time, you just have to go out and play. I have to do my job regardless of what is going on.”
With being signed by the Grizzlies franchise and playing with the Hustle just a few hours later, Henry was a man on the move. To add drama to an already emotional day for him, his game with the Hustle came down to the wire, and Henry was relied upon in the clutch.
“I’m a team first guy, and will always do whatever the team needs me to do to win the game,” said Henry. “If they need me to defend and get stops, that is what I am going to do. I don’t really care about the points, and if they come, I am a team guy.”
Henry came up with some clutch defensive stops when it mattered most ensuring his Memphis Hustle team a win over the Maine Red Claws, 124-119. He also managed to score 26 points to put his imprint on the game offensively as well.
Now a contract player, Henry’s motto will stay the same.
“Nothing will change in how I go about my business,” said Henry. “Continue to work hard, and trust the process.”
