Four seasons ago, Jonathon Simmons‘ basketball career hung in the balance as he attempted to make the NBA D-League through an open tryout with the Austin Spurs.
In February, he will participate in NBA All-Star Weekend.
The second-year San Antonio Spurs guard was selected to the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge as part of a U.S. Team roster than includes heralded young stars like Karl Anthony-Towns and Devin Booker. Simmons took much different road to the game — a long, winding road that included stops at two junior colleges, a stint in the now-defunct American Basketball League, an open tryout with the Austin Spurs and two seasons in the NBA D-League.
