EL SEGUNDO, California – The Los Angeles D-Fenders fell to the Austin Spurs 118-116 tonight in El Segundo.
Los Angeles (9-25) was led by Jabari Brown, who tallied 32 points, connecting on 7-of-17 FGA’s and 16-of-19 FTA’s. Jamaal Franklin followed suit with 27 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. In seven games with Los Angeles, Franklin has three games with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. Roscoe Smith (15 points), Ater Majok (13 points, 15 rebounds), Keith Appling (11 points) and Andre Ingram (10 points) all reached double-figures for the D-Fenders.
San Antonio Spurs assignee Kyle Anderson paced the Austin Spurs with 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Erik Murphy also reached the 20-point plateau with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Orlando Johnson (19 points, nine rebounds), Jonathan Simmons (19 points) and Bryce Cotton (15 points, five assists) all scored in double digits for Austin.
It was a close contest throughout, with Austin holding a 29-27 lead at the end of the first quarter. Brown led the D-Fenders with seven points, while Cotton had nine for the Spurs. The second quarter was much of the same, with Austin outscoring Los Angeles 35-32 behind nine points from Johnson. Brown continued to pace the D-Fenders, finishing with nine points in the second quarter and 16 on the half.
Austin shot 50% in the third quarter and outscored Los Angeles 28-26. Wright led the Spurs with nine points, while Brown finished with eight for the D-Fenders. Los Angeles fought back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Spurs 31-26 behind 11 points from Franklin. The rally would come up short, as the D-Fenders fell 118-116.
Los Angeles shot .421, compared to .450 for Austin. The D-Fenders bench outscored the Spurs bench 50-28, while also tallying more free throws, connecting on 31-of-41 attempts, compared to 21-of-26 for Austin.
The D-Fenders head to Reno, NV tomorrow to face the Bighorns at 7:00pm PT.
