BOISE, Idaho — The NBA D-League Champion Santa Cruz Warriors (10-13) fell to the Idaho Stampede (8-15) 101-91 on Tuesday at CenturyLink Arena.
Santa Cruz’s Daniel Nwaelele notched a team-high 23 points, while Darington Hobson added 16 points. Kevon Looney, on assignment from Golden State, posted a double-double in his professional debut, finishing with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 16 minutes.
The Stampede was led by Jeff Ayres who scored 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Phil Pressey and Bryce Dejean-Jones had 16 apiece in the victory over Santa Cruz.
The first quarter would see a hot-shooting start from Santa Cruz, advancing to an early 15-0 lead behind a quick sharp-shooting spree from Daniel Nwaelele, who scored 15 points in the opening frame.
Idaho went on a 16-4 run to lead by as many as 10 points before the Warriors battled back to cut the host’s advantage. The Stampede would turn the ball over on four of the final five possessions of the half to allow Santa Cruz to convert and get within two points heading into the break.
Idaho would keep Santa Cruz at bay coming out of the break, never allowing the visitors to eclipse their lead. Though the Warriors would get within three points of the Stampede midway through the final frame, their fourth-quarter rally was not enough to notch the victory.
