SALT LAKE CITY (December 16, 2016) — The Rio Grande Valley Vipers started fast and finished strong to defeat the Salt Lake City Stars 87-75 behind Jarvis Threatt’s game-high 16 points off the bench on Friday at the Lifetime Activities Center-Bruin Arena on the Salt Lake Community College campus.
The Stars, the NBA Development League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, dropped to 2-11 on the season while Houston Rockets affiliate Rio Grande Valley improved to 11-4. The two teams will play again at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17 at Salt Lake Community College.
Stars center Joel Bolomboy collected a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds while on assignment for the Utah Jazz. Ten different players scored for the Stars led by Tyrone Wallace with 15 points while Jermaine Taylor added 12.
Former Salt Lake Community College standout Gary Payton II collected six points, a team-high 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Vipers. Utah Jazz alumnus Chris Johnson chipped in 13 points and five rebounds while Chinanu Onuaku had 15 points and JP Tokoto added 14 points for Rio Grande Valley.
The Stars never recovered from 3 of 23 field goal shooting in the first quarter to trail 22-10. Behind JJ O’Brien and Wallace, the Stars rallied to close the margin to 40-34 at halftime. The Vipers maintained their advantage throughout the second half opening up their biggest lead of 24 points in the fourth quarter.
