MCALLEN, TEXAS — Led by point guard Darius Morris (23 points, 11 assists), the Rio Grande Valley Vipers sunk 15 three-pointers en route to a 119-106 victory in Game 1 of the 2017 NBA D-League Finals.
The win came just hours after RGV’s parent club, the Houston Rockets, notched a playoff victory of their own. The best-of-three series — which pits the league’s top-ranked offense in the Vipers against its top-ranked defense in the 905 — now shifts to Mississauga, Ontario for Tuesday’s Game 2 (7 PM ET, ESPNU).
After trailing 10-1 just minutes in to the first quarter, the Vipers bounced back to take a four-point lead into halftime. They pulled way with a 38-point third quarter in which Morris erupted for 14 points.
Forward CJ Leslie led Raptors 905 with 25 points off the bench. Toronto Raptors rookie Pascal Siakam tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds on assignment, while teammate Bruno Caboclo added six points.
Three Rockets boosted the Vipers on assignment from Houston: forward Kyle Wiltjer (18 points, 3/6 3FG), guard Isaiah Taylor (17 points, 10 assists) and center Chinanu Onuaku (8 points, 10 rebounds).
