ONTARIO, Calif. — The Memphis Hustle righted the ship with a 94-93 victory over the Agua Caliente Clippers on Thursday at Citizens Business Bank Arena, snapping a four-game losing streak. Trailing 93-92, Marquis Teague knocked down two free throws to give Memphis the lead with 2.9 seconds left. Marshall Plumlee’s three-point attempt fell short before time expired.
The Hustle opened up the game with a 12-0 run and would end the first quarter with a 38-17 lead, leading by as many as 23. Memphis shot 16 of 26 in the period (4-8 3PT) and assisted on 11 of its 16 field goals while not committing a single turnover. However, the Hustle hit a scoreless drought of 6:47 in the second quarter, allowing the Clippers to pull within a 51-44 margin at halftime. Memphis shot just 6 of 19 (.316) with 10 turnovers in the second quarter, a season-high for any quarter.
The Clippers started the second half on an 8-0 run to take the team’s first lead of the game, but the Hustle responded with a 10-2 run of their own and would stretch the lead back to 14 with 9:11 remaining in the fourth quarter. Agua Caliente would then go on a 20-4 run capped by an Andre Dawkins three-pointer with 55.5 seconds left to retake the lead at 93-91. A free throw by Durand Scott followed by Teague’s two free throws sealed the win for Memphis.
Three Hustle players recorded double-doubles, led by Trahson Burrell’s season-high tying 20 points along with 10 rebounds. Burrell scored 12 of his 20 points in the first quarter on 5-of-5 shooting. Teague posted 17 points and his 10 assists are a season-high for any Hustle player. Omari Johnson contributed 11 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Additionally, Scott posted a season-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. The Hustle were without two-way players Vince Hunter and Kobi Simmons for the second straight game while the duo joined the Grizzlies.
Tyrone Wallace had another big night for the Clippers, scoring 28 points on 12-of-19 (.631) shooting to go with five assists, four rebounds and three steals. In the two meetings with Memphis this week, Wallace averaged 29.0 points, 5.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals on 25-of-38 shooting (.658). Plumlee (10 points, 11 rebounds) added a double-double of his own while LaDontae Henton contributed 18 points and six rebounds.
The Hustle will make its return to Landers Center this Saturday, December 2 for a noon tip-off against the Delaware 87ers.
