ERIE, Penn. — The Erie BayHawks (11-14), NBA G League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club, took down the Long Island Nets (14-10) tonight inside Erie Insurance Arena, 109-103. Erie now advances to 8-5 at home this season.
The first quarter of tonight’s contest was all Erie, as the BayHawks poured in 33 points on 12-20 (.600) shooting from the floor. Raphiel Putney and Jeremy Evans combined for 18 of Erieâ€™s 33 first quarter points. After 12 minutes of play, the BayHawks held a 33-18 lead. Erie commanded a 21-point, 41-20, lead off of a Jordan Mathews finger roll at the 9:12 mark of the second quarter. The Nets were able to close the gap to get within seven points, 51-44, off of a Thomas Wimbush free throw with 2:11 left to play in the first half. Heading into halftime, Erie held a 58-46 lead.
The BayHawks were able to maintain their double-digit lead in the third quarter. After 36 minutes of action, Erie had an 83-69 advantage. Long Island began the final quarter of play on an 18-6 run. Tahjere McCall buried two free throws to bring the Nets within two points, 89-87, with 5:49 left in regulation. The Nets took their first and only lead of the game off of a Shannon Scott three-pointer at the 4:15 mark of the fourth quarter, 90-89. Jeremy Hollowell responded by knocking down a jumper, giving the BayHawks a 91-90 lead. As time expired, Erie came away with a 109-103 win.
Raphiael Putney notched his second consecutive double-double, finishing with a team-high 19 points on 6-11 (.545) shooting from the floor, including a 2-4 (.500) clip from three-point land, a game-high 14 rebounds, two steals and a game-high three blocks in 35.4 minutes. Jeremy Evans recorded his ninth double-double in 10 games tonight, tallying 11 points on 5-7 (.714) shooting, 11 rebounds and one block in 21.2 minutes. Josh Magette dished out a game-high eight assists, to go along with 16 points and a team-high tying two steals in 36.1 minutes.
Derrick Marks contributed 17 points, four rebounds and one steal in 28.2 minutes as a reserve. The BayHawks had six players score in double figures tonight (Raphiael Putney-19, Derrick Marks-17, Josh Magette-16, Craig Sword-15, Jeremy Hollowell-14, Jordan Mathews-13, Jeremy Evans-11).
Jeremy Senglin paced Long Island with a game-high 21 points, a 4-8 (.500) mark from beyond the arc, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 35.5 minutes. Akil Mitchell recorded a near double-double, finishing with a team-high tying nine rebounds, 10 points on 4-5 (.800) shooting, two assists and two blocks in 27.1 minutes off the bench. Isaiah Whitehead netted 19 points, two assists and one block in 15.3 minutes.
