PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – Mike Young had a day. That’s the understatement of the year.
Young set a new Northern Arizona Suns record for points scored in a game with 41 Friday at the Prescott Valley Event Center in his team’s 123-112 win over the Maine Red Claws. Young broke Elijah Millsap’s previous record of 38 points set in the Suns’ season finale of their inaugural season, when they played at the Reno Bighorns on April 1, 2017.
Young shot 15-of-23 from the field, including 5-of-7 from distance, 6-of-8 from the free throw line, to go with two rebounds. He played 38 minutes off the bench.
The University of Pittsburgh alum made his first six shots to open the game, scoring 15 points in seven minutes, taking the Suns to a 35-29 lead after the opening quarter.
The Suns (14-18) would need every point against the Red Claws (16-18), holding just a seven-point lead with six minutes left in the game.
Xavier Silas also had a monster game, tallying 33 points on 11-of-20 shooting, 5-of-12 from deep, 6-of-6 from the free throw line, to go with four rebounds and four assists. The 33 points tied a season-high for Silas (Nov. 19 vs. Iowa) and it marked his third 30+ point game of the year.
Archie Goodwin had a double-double with 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting, 10 rebounds, and three steals. He played 45 minutes tonight as the Suns only had nine players available with starting point guard Josh Gray earning a GATORADE Call-Up to the Phoenix Suns today. Danuel House and Alec Peters were both with the Phoenix Suns too on their Two-Way contracts.
Shaquille Harrison started in place of Gray and recorded 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, 10 rebounds and seven assists. It was his second double-double of the year.
As a team, the Suns shot 46-of-84 (.548) from the field and 13-of-25 (.520) from distance. They made just as many threes as the Red Claws, although Maine took 14 more attempts.
Anthony Bennett returned to play against his former team and led Maine with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 6-of-9 from deep, to go with seven rebounds and three assists. Two other Red Claws scored 20+ points, as Daniel Dixon and L.J. Peak each scored 21.
