HIDALGO, Texas — The NBA G League’s Rio Grande Valley Vipers, proud affiliate of the Houston Rockets, will remain undefeated at home for the month of February after defeating Oklahoma City Blue 132-121. After starting the game on a six-point run, the Vipers held the lead for the entirety of the game.
RGV’s Troy Williams led both teams in scoring with 28 points. Williams also had 10 rebounds in the game. Chinanu Onuaku collected a double-double as well with 13 points and 12 rebounds. RJ Hunter added 26 points from off the bench. Rashawn Thomas was the leading scorer for the Blue with 24 points.
The Vipers took advantage of the size difference and dominated the Blue in the paint early in the game, outscoring them 18-8 in points in the paint in the opening quarter. Chinanu Onuaku scored eight points in the first quarter while Zhou Qi had seven points.
Rio Grande Valley entered the second quarter of the game with a nine-point lead and extended the lead to 25 points at one point. Isaiah Hartenstein scored 12 points after going scoreless in the opening quarter. The Vipers finished the first quarter on top 69-53.
The Vipers started the third quarter hot, going on a 16-3 run. Oklahoma City’s Bryce Alford gave life to the Blue. Alford went five-of-six from beyond the three-point line and scored 15 points after only scoring five in the first half. RGV maintained a 15-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Blue were able to cut the deficit to 10 points with five minutes left in the game thanks to a Rashawn Thomas three-point shot. As the game was coming to an end, Rio Grande Valley’s RJ Hunter scored three consecutive three-pointers to keep Oklahoma City Blue at a distance and secure the home win.
