ERIE, Penn. — The Canton Charge (16-24) defeated the Erie BayHawks (21-19), 102-100, at the Erie Insurance Arena on Saturday night.
Trailing 100-95 and 2:03 left in the game, the Charge strung together four defensive stops to help close the game on a 7-0 run. Down 100-99 and 21.1 seconds left, Canton’s Marcus Thornton got off the 14-foot jumper before the shot clock expired to put his team ahead. After 13 first half turnovers for 19 points, the visitors only surrendered four second half turnovers for five points.
Thornton led the six double digit Charge scorers with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting in 34 minutes on assignment from the Cavaliers. Grant Jerrett had 17 points and seven boards in 30 minutes. London Perrantes added 10 points, six rebounds and six assists in 38 minutes. Gerald Beverly came off the bench to provide a spark of 13 points, nine rebounds and five blocks, a single game high for any Canton player this season, in 19 minutes.
Andrew White’s 18 points in 26 minutes off the bench paced the BayHawks. Raphiael Putney had a double-double of 12 points and 16 rebounds with five blocks in 35 minutes. Jaylen Morris had 16 points and six boards in 34 minutes, while Josh Magette added eight points, 10 assists and three steals in 34 minutes. The BayHawks worked the ball inside for 66 points in the pain to Canton’s 42.
