SALT LAKE CITY — The Austin Spurs defeated the host Salt Lake City Stars, the official NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, 108-102 on Tuesday night.
Austin (9-6) was led by Nick Johnson, who scored a game-high 29 points to go with nine assists, five rebounds and three steals. San Antonio Spurs two-way player Drew Eubanks recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds to go with a career-high six blocks, and John Holland tallied 19 points and three steals. Lonnie Walker IV, currently on assignment from the San Antonio Spurs, scored 15 points.
Salt Lake City (7-8) was paced by Willie Reed, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2018 NBA G League Draft, who tallied his third double-double in four games (ninth this season) with 17 points and 11 rebounds to go with a season-high-tying four blocks. Georges Niang, currently on assignment from the Utah Jazz, finished with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Grayson Allen, also on assignment from the Utah Jazz, tallied 14 points on 4-of-8 (.500) from three-point range.
Utah Jazz two-way player Tyler Cavanaugh and Jairus Lyles each scored 14 points, leading all Stars reserves, and Utah Jazz two-way player Naz Mitrou-Long recorded 12 points, four assists, three rebounds, one steal and one block.
The Stars entered halftime with an eight-point advantage (48-40) and extended their lead to 11 points (51-40) in the first few seconds of the second half, but the Spurs responded with an 11-0 run to tie the game (51-51). The two teams were knotted at 56-all when Austin took the lead on a 9-0 spurt (65-56) and pushed its advantage to as many as 16 points (89-73) in the fourth quarter. The Stars chipped away and cut the lead to six points in the final minute of play, but Austin held on for the win.
Salt Lake City connected on more three-pointers (13-12) and scored more points in the paint (46-42). The Spurs outshot the Stars (.488-.404), grabbed more rebounds (52-41) and blocked more shots (16-8).
