LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The South Bay Lakers lost their first game of the MGM Resorts Winter Showcase, as they fell to the Greensboro Swarm, 106-90, on Thursday night. Joel Berry II and Travis Wear each scored 19 points for South Bay (9-10) in the loss. Jaylen Barford led the Swarm (9-8) with 18 points off the bench.
Berry II led South Bay to a 26-22 lead after one as he scored eight points in the period on a perfect 4-of-4 from the field. Wear added seven points in the opening frame for the Lakers. The Lakers went into the half with a 50-47 lead behind six points and nine rebounds from Jemerrio Jones, while Johnathan Williams poured in seven points, six rebounds and four assists.
Greensboro took a 77-70 lead after three behind 11 points in the period from Barford. Berry II and Scott Machado combined for 10 points in the quarter to keep the Lakers within striking distance going into the final quarter.
Barford and J.P. Macura each scored 18 points to lead the way for Greensboro. Chinanu Onuaku tallied a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds while John Dawson (12 points) and Tyler Nelson (10 points) also scored in double figures.
Berry II scored 19 points off the bench and Wear tallied 19 points with seven rebounds for the Lakers. Alex Caruso finished with 11 points and seven rebounds and Williams recorded eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Jones registered eight points and 14 rebounds off the bench for South Bay as Machado finished with 13 points and nine assists.
South Bay will play their second game of the MGM Resorts NBA G League Winter Showcase on Saturday, December 22 at 12:00pm PT when they face the Fort Wayne Mad Ants from the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
