PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, won a triple-overtime thriller at the buzzer, when Kaiser Gates’ shot rolled around the rim and in, sealing a 120-118 3OT win over the Capital City Go-Go.
Maine (14-6) got heroics in triple OT by Gates and Jaysean Paige, who scored 5 of his 14 points in triple OT. Boston Celtics Two-Way Player Tremont Waters led Maine with 30 points on 10-25 shooting, including 5-12 from downtown, to go with 7 assists. Gates finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Yante Maten added 12 points, and Justin Bibbs and Bryce Brown scored 11 each.
Capital City (10-11) was led by Phil Booth, who scored a game-high 32 points, including 8-12 from downtown. Former Red Claw Jalen Jones added 25 points and 15 rebounds in the loss.
Waters started the game draining a tough three. Capital City would go on a roll from there, with Booth knocking in three triples. The Go-Go led 15-8 halfway through the first period. The Red Claws continued a slow shooting start, but Waters helped stop the run, scoring 11 points in the first quarter. Still, with the Red Claws shooting under 30% in the quarter, Maine trailed 31-20 after 1.
In the 2nd, Trey Davis and Gates caught fire, as the Red Claws cut the deficit to single digits. Booth continued to fill it up from the outside, with former Red Claw Jalen Jones knocking in a pair of threes as well. Jones’ nifty three-point play gave him 10 at the half, and gave Capital City a 54-42 halftime lead. Waters led Maine with 13 points, but picked up three fouls in the half. Maine shot 29.2% (14-48) from the floor in the half, and just 19% (5-26) from downtown. Booth led all scorers with 19 points at the break.
Both teams heated up in the second half. Waters knocked in a pair of threes to get Maine back in the game. Capital City made 8 of its first 9 shots to open the 3rd period. Gates and Justin Bibbs led the charge, as Maine out-scored Capital City 36-27 in the period, to get the deficit to 81-78 after 3. In the 4th, the Red Claws continued to rally, with Gates filling up the basket. The Red Claws got it to 2, and Brown tied the game at the end of the 4th with a lay-in. The game went to overtime tied at 110.
Bibbs and Jerian Grant scored in the 1st overtime, but the game remained tied, headed to 2OT. After just 1 point each was scored in the second OT, the game went to triple OT tied at 113. Paige hit a big three to tie the game at 116. Jalen Hudson’s bucket put the Go-Go up 2. At the end of 3OT, with the ball, Brown blocked a shot, which Paige grabbed. He then fed Gates under the basket for the game-winner at the buzzer.
The Red Claws wound up shooting 41.5% (44-106) from the field, 30.4% (17-56) from downtown, and 9-10 from the free throw line. Capital City shot 46.1% (47-102) from the floor, 40% (14-35) from beyond the arc, and 6-12 from the charity stripe.
The Red Claws are back in action Saturday when they face Grand Rapids.
