EL SEGUNDO – The South Bay Lakers struggled to score on the second night of a back-to-back as they lost to the Austin Spurs, 123-106, on Sunday night. Kostas Antetokounmpo finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers (10-14) in the loss. Keldon Johnson scored a game-high 25 points for the Spurs (15-9) in the win.
Austin held a 39-27 lead after one, as Daulton Hommes and Angel Rodriquez each scored 10 points in the opening frame. South Bay went into the half down by eight, 66-58, despite 12 points in the first half from Zach Norvell Jr.
Austin went into the fourth quarter with a 105-89 lead as Quinndary Weatherspoon scored 10 points in the third quarter. Neither team produced many points in the fourth quarter, but by that point the Spurs had already guaranteed the road victory.
Johnson’s 25 points paced Austin and Chimezie Metu added an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double. Rodriguez finished the night with 21 points, Weatherspoon tallied 16 points and Dedric Lawson scored 10 as all five starters reached double figures. Hommes recorded 13 points and seven assists off the bench.
Antetokounmpo’s third double-double of the year led the Lakers, while Talen Horton-Tucker (16 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks) and Jordan Caroline (15 points, 13 rebounds) each recorded their second consecutive double-double of the weekend. Norvell Jr. finished with 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal and Travis Wear also reached double figures with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
