GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro Swarm, the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, evened its season series with the Erie BayHawks (New Orleans Pelicans affiliate), 2-2, after a, 118-115, victory on Thursday at the Fieldhouse at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. Caleb Martin, on assignment from the Hornets, led Greensboro (7-23) with 27 points while Vitto Brown’s 25 points paced the BayHawks (9-20).
Erie’s largest lead was one point (3-1) and it came on a Brown 3-pointer early in the first quarter. From there, the Swarm maintained the lead throughout – up by 19 points at one point. Greensboro led, 36-27, after the first quarter and entered half up, 64-56.
Greensboro carried a double-digit lead entering the fourth quarter, 95-82, but Erie had a strong final 12 minutes that nearly sent the game into overtime. The BayHawks shot 48 percent in the fourth and was solid defensively, holding the Swarm to 26 percent. However, the Swarm made its free throws down the stretch to secure the win by making its last 12 from the stripe.
In addition to Martin, the Swarm had strong performances from Joe Chealey (22 points, six assists) and Thomas Welsh (19 points, 12 rebounds). Greensboro’s two-way players each contributed as Kobi Simmons had 19 points and Ray Spalding scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
For the BayHawks, Aubrey Dawkins scored 22 points off the bench in 21 minutes. Zylan Cheatham had a double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds. Josh Gray added 19 points while Jalen Adams and Bronson Koenig each had 15 points.
Greensboro next heads to Maine to take on the Red Claws (Boston Celtics affiliate) on Saturday, February 1, at 7:00 p.m. The Swarm are back at home on Wednesday, February 5, when the Raptors 905 (Toronto Raptors affiliate) visit the Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m.
