GREENSBORO, NC — The Grand Rapids Drive coasted to an impressive and needed road win against Greensboro on Friday night by a final score of 103-77. The win moved the Drive to 18-14 on the season as they remain the six seed in the Eastern Conference.
Both teams struggled with securing the ball in the first quarter, but the Drive tightened up offensively to push the lead to 51-36 heading into the second half after a 16-0 run. Grand Rapids was able to keep that momentum after the midway break, outscoring the Swarm 32-19 in the third which led to a game-high advantage of 28 points for the visiting Drive.
Grand Rapids had impressive performances from a handful of guys on the night as they were once again without Pistons two-way players Jordan Bone and Louis King. Big man Adam Woodbury dominated the paint tonight, earning a team-high 18 points on 6-8 shooting from the floor and going 4-6 from the line while adding a team-high 8 rebounds off the bench. Tre’Shawn Thurman also came off the bench to ad 16 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds to the mix. Todd Withers racked up a solid 15 points, shooting 55% (5-9) from the three-point line, while adding 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Donta Hall matched Withers’ 15 points on 7-8 shooting from the field and chipped up 7 rebounds and 2 steals of his own.
Greensboro was led by two players tonight who added double digit stat lines for the home team. Hornets assignee Caleb Martin tallied up a team-high 19 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists while Hornets two-way player Ray Spalding followed up with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
The Swarm put up a hard-fought battle that resulted in the lead changing 12 times, but the Drive’s ability to connect their shots advanced their lead in the end. Grand Rapids shot 51% (38-75) from the field and 38% (9-24) from beyond the arc compared to just 37% (29-78) from the field and 14% (5-36) from Greensboro.
The Drive have a quick turnaround and will be back in action tomorrow night to face off with the Windy City Bulls at the Sears Centre. The Swarm will have nearly a week of rest before their next match-up against the Wisconsin Herd on February 13 in Oshkosh, WI. Tip-off for both games is at 7 p.m. local time.
