– Ignite Tops Austin, 127-92, to Earn No. 8 Seed in NBA G League Playoffs –
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. March 6, 2021 – Faced with a win-or-go-home matchup against the Austin Spurs, NBA G League Ignite churned out a 127-92 victory Saturday evening to clinch the final spot in the G League playoffs. Ignite improves to 8-7 on the season, and Austin is now 10-5.
With the win, Ignite punched its ticket as the No. 8 seed in the single-elimination playoffs and will face top-seeded Raptors 905 at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, while Austin is the No. 5 seed and will meet No. 4 seed Delaware at 8:15 p.m. Monday. Ignite eliminated Oklahoma City Blue from playoff contention after the Blue fell to Santa Cruz, 113-103 in overtime, Saturday afternoon. An OKC Blue win would have eliminated Ignite.
After trailing Austin 11-4 at the 7:36 mark, Ignite erupted with a 17-0 run that featured 3-pointers from Isaiah Todd, Jarrett Jack and Cody Demps. The outburst helped Ignite build a 10-point cushion, 29-19, to end the first quarter, and Ignite never relinquished its control, outscoring the Spurs in every quarter.
Amir Johnson poured in 27 points and shot a perfect 12-12 from the field – the most consecutive field goals without a miss by a G League player since Devontae Cacok on Feb. 12, 2020.
Isaiah Todd added a 25-point, 11-rebound double-double alongside three assists and two blocks. Jalen Green scored 18, Daishen Nix added 12 and Demps chipped in 10 points. Bobby Brown finished with nine points and nine assists, and every Ignite player to enter the game scored in the total-team win.
Quinndary Weatherspoon led the Spurs with 22 points, and Kenny Williams (15 points), Cameron Reynolds (10) and Galen Robinson Jr. (10) all finished in double figures.
Austin, who had already earned a playoff berth entering Saturday’s contest, shot 39.5 percent (32-81) for the game and gave up 21 points on 15 turnovers. Ignite’s 55.7 percent (49-88) shooting clip was its best all season, and the team turned the ball over a season-low 13 times while outscoring the Spurs 58-34 in the paint.
The NBA G League Playoffs begin Monday, with the NBA G Final presented by YouTube TV set for March 11.
