PORTLAND, Maine – The Maine Celtics, presented by Unum, overcame a 4th quarter deficit to bounce back from Friday’s loss and take down the Delaware Blue Coats, 113-108 Sunday at the Portland Expo.
Maine (3-1) was led by Theo Pinson, who led all scorers with 30 points on 12-18 shooting. Boston Celtics Two-Way Player Sam Hauser added 19 points and 7 assists, while Ryan Arcidiacono finished with 19 points and 8 dimes. Jaysean Paige led the bench with 14 points, all off the bench, while Luke Kornet was near a triple-double with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Juwan Morgan added 11 points in the win.
Delaware (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season. The Blue Coats were led by Braxton Key with 21 points. Shaquille Harrison added 18 and Haywood Highsmith 16 in the loss.
Kornet fed Hauser early for a open corner three to put the Celtics up 3. Maine and Delaware would trade buckets early. Kornet found Clemons under the basket for a lay-up to put Maine up 13-9. Paige picked up where he left off Friday night, leading the team offensively from the bench scoring 10 points in the 1st quarter alone on 4-4 shooting. Morgan’s lay-up extended the lead, and the Celtics took a 27-21 lead after the 1st quarter of play.
In the 2nd, Paige’s steal and score put Maine up 10. Pinson and Deng Adel followed that up with two lay-ups to make it 37-25 Celtics. It was a sloppy first half, with the teams combining for 34 turnovers. Kornet banked in a three followed by a Pinson field goal, but Shaquille Harrison’s runner at the end of the period cut into the Celtics advantage and made it a 48-42 lead for Maine at halftime. Paige led all scorers with 14 points in the first ahlf, while Maine shot 60.6% (20-33) from the field, while holding Delaware 41.7% (15-36).
Kornet opened the 3rd with a pair of baskets. Hauser heated up from the outside, and Maine’s lead swelled to double-digits. Shamorie Ponds kept the Blue Coats in the game. Ponds’ fadeaway jumper cut it to 65-52. Delaware got back into the game with back-to-back and-ones, Brian Cameron’s circus shot made it 69-64 Maine. Arcidiacono hit three three-pointers in a row for Maine, but Delaware out-scored the Celtics 34-30 in the 3rd period, making it just a 78-76 game going into the final quarter.
In the 4th, the Blue Coats opened the quarter on a 15-5 run. Haywood Highsmith’s corner three made it 91-83 Delaware. Pinson’s three followed by Kornet’s driving dunk got the Maine offense going. Pinson scored a bucket one way, but Highsmith answered with a three the other way. Hauser beat the shot clock to give Maine the lead at 101-99. Braxton Key responded with a three of his own. Arcidiacono answered with a big bucket followed by an assist to Pinson for a big dunk. Arcidiacono put the game away with the final field goal.
Maine finished shooting 60.3% (44-73) from the field, 50% (15-30) from three-point range, and 9-12 from the free throw line. Delaware shot 51.3% (40-78) from the floor, 43.8% (14-32) from downtown, and 8-10 from the charity stripe.
