AUSTIN, Texas – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (1-3), NBA G League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, fell 124-127 to the Austin Spurs (1-1) on Monday night.
During the first and second quarter both teams tried to pull away with the lead, but even with 1:37 remaining in the second quarter both teams were tied 62-62. With 50 seconds remaining on the clock Austin claimed the lead and sent the game 67-64 into halftime.
Returning from halftime Austin went on an 8-0 run and grasped a 75-64 lead. After coming back from an 11-point deficit the Vipers managed to take the 81-79 lead of the game from the Spurs with 7:10 remaining on the clock. It was a back and forth battle for the lead, but Austin pushed away 97-94.
With 1:01 remaining in the fourth quarter RGV tied the game 119-119. Despite the Vipers efforts, the Spurs grasped a 124-127 victory over RGV.
Houston Rockets two-way player Trevelin Queen reached a career high in points and steals with 31 points, seven steals and five rebounds. Houston Rockets two-way player Daishen Nix reached a double-double with 29 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Four other Vipers players reached double digits in scoring; Trahae Mitchell (13 points and eight rebounds), Anthony Lamb (11 points), Marcus Foster (11 points) and Houston Rockets assignee Usman Garuba (10 points and nine rebounds).
San Antonio Spurs two-way player Devontae Cacok posted a double-double with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Five other Spurs players reached the double digits; Kaleb Johnson (23 points), Joshua Primo (21 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals), Jayvon Graves (13 points), Aric Holman (11 points, eight rebounds and five assists) and Jaylen Morris (10 points and nine rebounds).
