March 12, 2022 – The Lakeland Magic, NBA G League affiliate of the Orlando Magic, fell to the Raptors 905, NBA G League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors, 112-109 at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland.
BJ Johnson looked unstoppable for the Magic in the first half. He came off the bench and scored 26 points in just 15 minutes, propelling Lakeland to an 11-point lead at the break. Jeff Dowtin picked up right where Johnson left off in the third quarter, en route a game-high 33 points. Dowtin was nearly perfect from the field, making 13 of his fourteen shots, including seven of eight three pointers.
The Magic had a nine-point lead going into the final period, but the league-leading Raptors battled back throughout the fourth to take the lead late in the game. With less than two minutes left and Lakeland trailing 102-101, Dowtin blocked a three-point shot from Breein Tyree, gathered the loose ball, and drove the length of the floor to take the lead. On the ensuing possession, Justin Champagnie finished a shot in the lane to reclaim the lead for the Raptors.
Down four with 14 seconds left, Dowtin drilled a three and was fouled on the shot for a possible four-point play. However, after a coach’s challenge, the foul was overturned, and the Magic still trailed by just one. A Lakeland foul and two made free throws left the Magic with possession and a chance to tie. Without calling a timeout to advance the ball, Lakeland inbounded to Dowtin, who drove down the court, darted to the left wing and sunk a contested three to tie the game at 109 as the RP Funding Center fans erupted. On the next possession Reggie Perry hit a contested three nearly at the buzzer in what proved to be the game winner.
Dowtin finished with 33 points, six assists and five rebounds. Johnson posted 31 points, five made threes and four steals. Orlando Magic two-way players Ignas Brazdeikis and Admiral Schofield added 14 points and 13 points respectively.
Perry finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Champagnie scored 21 points and 10 rebounds. Tyree added 20 points and two assists.
