2018 NBA G League Draft: What You Need to Know

By Jake Winderman | October 9, 2018

The 2018 NBA G League Draft is set to take place on Saturday, October 20 beginning at 1 PM ET. This year’s draft will feature four rounds of selections, amounting to 108 total picks between 27 NBA G League teams.

Here’s what you need to know about the event.

How can I follow the draft?

NBAGLeague.com, the NBA G League App and @NBAGLeague social will provide live coverage on draft day, including pick-by-pick results.

Which players are eligible to get drafted?

Every fall, 100+ players are signed by the league office and placed in the NBA G League Draft pool, including NBA and NBA G League vets, international pros and prospects, undrafted rookies and NBA G League National Tryout players. Players must be 18 years old to be eligible for the NBA G League Draft, as opposed to the NBA’s age minimum of 19.

Players are eligible to be selected in the 2018 NBA G League Draft if they signed a contract with the NBA G League by Oct. 15 (for players who weren’t in NBA training camps) or Oct. 18 (for players who were in NBA training camps) and their rights are not held by an NBA G League team. Players who participated in NBA Training Camp and were designated as affiliate players are not draft-eligible.  They are allocated directly to the NBA team’s NBA G League affiliate.

Many of the top picks arrive days before the draft after either arriving from overseas or being waived by NBA teams.

Who are the best players who have been selected in the draft in the past?

Notable players selected in previous NBA G League Drafts include Robert Covington (2014/No. 1/Grand Rapids Drive), James Johnson (2013/No. 2/Rio Grande Valley Vipers), Shelvin Mack (2012/No. 4/Maine Red Claws), Jamaal Tinsley (2011/No. 1/South Bay Lakers), Smush Parker (2008/No. 12/Rio Grande Valley Vipers) and Chris “Birdman” Andersen, the NBA G League’s first-ever draft pick and No. 1 overall selection in the inaugural 2001 draft.
