The Wisconsin Herd entered the NBA G League during the 2017-2018 season along with the new Erie BayHawks, Lakeland Magic, Memphis Hustle and Agua Caliente Clippers. The Milwaukee Bucks eyed five cities for their NBA G League expansion team including Grand Chute, La Crosse, Racine and Sheboygan before deciding on Oshkosh, where the team currently plays. Wisconsin Herd President Steve Brandes said that the team selected the nickname “Herd” because “The Wisconsin Herd is so much more than a team name; it’s a brand that embodies a group of players fighting to join the Milwaukee Bucks.”
In their first season as a franchise, Xavier Munford led the team in scoring and assists, averaging 24.4 points and 5.2 dimes in 34 games with the Herd. Joel Bolomboy paced the team with 9.6 rebounds in 30 games with Wisconsin, while Cliff Alexander led the Herd in field goal percentage, shooting 56.9 percent from the floor in 28 NBA G League games.
The Herd are the first NBA G League team to call the state of Wisconsin their home and currently play their home games at Menominee Nation Arena. This season, two-way players Jaylen Morris from Molloy College (DII) and Trevon Duval of Duke will call both Milwaukee and Oshkosh their homes as they split time between the Bucks and the Herd.
