GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – The Grand Rapids Drive, the official NBA G League Affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, announced today that the team has completed a trade with the South Bay Lakers.
The two teams agreed to the following terms. The Grand Rapids Drive will trade the teams original second round pick (#39) in this year’s 2017 NBA G League Draft to the South Bay Lakers in exchange for the returning player rights to Kenneth “Speedy” Smith.
Smith, (6-foot-3, 180-pound) the point-guard out of Louisiana Tech averaged, in 140 games, 6.2 points, 6.1 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game, earning the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year honors as a junior and C-USA Player of the Year honors as a senior. After graduation, Smith attended several NBA pre-draft workouts for the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons however, he went undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft.
In August 2015, Smith signed a two-year deal with VEF Rīga of the Latvian Basketball League. Then later in November, he was released by Rīga after appearing in three league games and eight VTB United League games. For the last two seasons (2015-16, 2016-17), Smith has appeared in 78 games (6 starts) for South Bay Lakers (previously the LA D-Fenders) and has had a combined career average of 5.06 points, 3.35 assists and 1.08 steals in 18.9 min per game.
The NBA G League Draft will take place on October 21, 2017 at 1:00 PM. The Grand Rapids Drive still have picks #13 (1st round), #31 (2nd round), #65 (3rd round), and #91 (4th round).
EL SEGUNDO – The South Bay Lakers have acquired a second round pick in the 2017 NBA G League Draft (39) from the Grand Rapids Drive in exchange for the returning player rights to Kenneth “Speedy” Smith.
With the addition of the 39th pick, South Bay now has five picks in the 2017 Draft: two first round picks (10 and 22), two second round picks (39 and 50) and a fourth round pick (98).
The 2017 NBA G League Draft will take place on Saturday, October 21 at 10:00 AM PST.
