Noel Gillespie Named Erie BayHawks Head Coach

ERIE, PA (July 19, 2018) – The Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club has named Noel Gillespie as Head Coach of the Erie BayHawks, its NBA G League affiliate, it was announced today by BayHawks General Manager Derek Pierce. Gillespie brings 16 years of professional basketball experience to Erie, including spending the last two seasons as head coach of the Greensboro Swarm, NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets.

“We are really excited to welcome Noel to the BayHawks family,” said BayHawks General Manager Derek Pierce. “Noel is a well-respected mind in the coaching community and brings a wealth of experience both in the NBA and the NBA G League. He’s worked alongside some great coaches and players in his career and we are thrilled to have him lead our team this season and beyond.”

Gillespie, 40, comes to the BayHawks after serving as the Greensboro Swarm’s inaugural head coach for the last two seasons. Prior to his time with the Swarm, he served as an assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets for three seasons (2013-16). Before joining the Nuggets, Gillespie worked for the Phoenix Suns for 10 seasons, spending his last four seasons as an assistant coach (2010-14).

“My family and I are honored and excited to be part of the Atlanta Hawks and Erie BayHawks family, as well as the Erie community,” Gillespie said. “I’m very thankful for this opportunity to develop young and talented players both on and off the court. I’m looking forward to bringing the culture of the Atlanta Hawks to Erie and building off of the success the BayHawks had last season.”

A native of Milwaukee, WI, Gillespie began his NBA career in 2001-02, serving as a video assistant for the Indiana Pacers. He then spent the 2002-03 season as a graduate assistant for men’s and women’s basketball at Florida State University. Gillespie is a graduate of University Wisconsin-Whitewater, earning a degree in electronic media communications with a minor in coaching.

He and his wife, Sherry, have two children, Jack and Rowen.

A formal press conference to introduce Gillespie and BayHawks General Manager Derek Pierce will be held in the upcoming weeks.
