SANTA CRUZ, CALIF. — Day 3 in Santa Cruz was a day with equal parts intrigue on and off the court. At Kaiser Permanente Arena, Bakersfield and Grand Rapids advanced to the Showcase Cup Championship behind big performances from, among others, Archie Goodwin and Lorenzo Brown respectively, while Austin’s Bryce Cotton put on a show with a 40-point, 11-rebound explosion in the day’s third game. The biggest news, however, was that NBADLeague.com’s former No. 1 overall Prospect Quincy Miller received a 10-day contract from the Sacramento Kings a day after a monster showing here in Santa Cruz. After all, that’s what it’s all about this week.

Here’s a deeper look into all that transpired during Day 3 of the NBA D-League Showcase presented by Samsung.

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Bryce Cotton, Spurs: It didn’t start pretty for the Spurs — Austin shot 23 percent as a team in the first half — but then Bryce Cotton happened. In the second half, the Providence product scored 25 points, including going 5-for-7 from behind the arc, to spearhead an Austin comeback win in a game where the Spurs had been down by as many as 18 in the third quarter. Cotton proved today that when he gets going, he can score as well as anyone in this league.
