Throughout the offseason, we're highlighting our favorite themes, promotions and events across the league from the NBA G League 2022-23 season.
The Iowa Wolves’ State Fair Night Becomes a Team Staple
Inspired at the 2022 G League Sales and Marketing Meetings during the Innovation Challenge session, the Iowa Wolves have begun a new tradition with their Iowa State Fair Night, presented by Landus. This collaborative event featured themes and activations paying homage to the Iowa State Fair and the rich agricultural history of Iowa.
The night began for fans at the front door, where sponsored trucker hats were passed out to the first 1,000 fans. On the concourse, fans could find unique activations such as the Wolves mascot, Alpha, sculpted out of butter and a baby goat petting zoo.
State Fair-themed foods, such as corn dogs, were 50% off throughout the game. Fans relished the opportunity to celebrate their iconic summer State Fair in the throes of an Iowa winter.
The Wolves promoted the day heavily on social in several unique ways, such as exclusive ticket offers and reply-driven posts like a goat naming contest. This partner-driven activation generated a sizeable amount of local earned media, social media attention, and was a sellout.

Austin Spurs “Weirder than Ever” with their annual Los Raros de Austin games
As part of their annual theme game calendar, the Austin Spurs hosted three games titled “Los Raros de Austin,” which translates to the Austin Weirdos. These games always feature unique and random giveaways, mascot performances and integration, and the team has an alternate logo and jersey. The Spurs have also produced a Raros limited merchandise line. Each year, the theme game series serves as some of the team’s most attended events.
At their three games, December 29, January 21, and February 10, fans received breakfast taco air fresheners, tighty whitie underwear, and a pool noodle as giveaways, respectively.
Tying in the community, fans were able to bring unopened pairs of underwear to the Tighty Whitie Night and get a voucher for a free ticket to a future game. All pairs of undies were donated back to the Salvation Army.
The team’s alternate identity was inspired by the city’s mantra, “Keep Austin Weird,” and the jerseys align Mexican folk art, brightly colored and loud to represent the eclectic personality and cultural cues of the city.

Mexico City Capitanes and their Record-Breaking Game
For the first time in franchise history, the Mexico City Capitanes celebrated Women’s History Month at one of their home games. Due to both the attendance record and celebration of women, the game was covered by 27 national and local media outlets, which is 25 percent more than the team’s normal coverage. The game also was in the top three in team merchandise sales.
The game, featuring eight different group experiences, surpassed the Capitanes’ record in single game tickets sold.
The in-game presentation featured a purple motif, including all female staff in purple t-shirts. The team partnered with Move Forward, a non-profit organization that offers workshops and community projects based on movement and trauma relief for women and featured the organization’s mission in-game to raise awareness and encourage donations.
All of the team’s partners were activating in some way throughout the game, such as Technocasa giving away t-shirts or La Moderna who had an experience with over 400 employees in attendance.
