Player: Zach Norvell Jr.
College: Gonzaga (2017-2019)
Height/Weight: 6-foot-5, 206 pounds
NBA Team/NBA G League Affiliate: Los Angeles Lakers/South Bay Lakers
College Breakdown: Norvell Jr. spent three seasons at Gonzaga, redshirting the first and playing the final two. He was named to the 2019 All-WCC First Team and was the 2018 WCC Newcomer of the Year. Norvell Jr. averaged 14.9 points per game during his final season at Gonzaga and led the WCC in 3-pointers made (262) at a 37% clip (2nd in WCC). The Chicago product also ranked in the Top 10 in the WCC in assists per game (3.1/tenth) and steals per game (1.3/ninth) during the 2018-19 season. Nicknamed “Snacks” while at Gonzaga, he helped the Bulldogs reach the Sweet Sixteen during his redshirt freshman season and the Elite Eight during his redshirt sophomore season.
Scouting Report: Norvell Jr. is an offensively gifted point guard with a knack for knocking down pull-up 3-pointers and posting up smaller guards. His 6-foot-5 frame gives him an edge as a guard on the defensive glass and a fearsome presence to opposing point guards. He’ll need to work on his shot selection and fouling at the next level, but the upside is there for the sharpshooting floor general out of Gonzaga.
Organizational Fit: After a reshuffling of their roster this offseason, the Lakers will run with Rajon Rondo, Quinn Cook and Alex Caruso as their point guards, with LeBron James playing a hybrid point-forward role. Norvell Jr.’s best shot to see playing time during his rookie season will be proving that he’s a capable off-the-catch 3-point shooter and on-ball defender.
