Player: Josh Reaves

College: Penn State (2015-2019)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-5, 214 pounds

NBA Team/NBA G League Affiliate: Dallas Mavericks/Texas Legends

College Breakdown: Reaves spent four seasons at Penn State, where he was named the 2018-19 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year during his senior year. The Virginia-native was named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team twice during his college tenure (’18, ’19), leading the conference in steals per game during his sophomore, junior and senior years. Reaves averaged 10.6 points, 5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1 block per game on 35.6% shooting from beyond the arc during the 2018-19 season and recorded at least 3 takeaways in 15 of the 32 games he played during his senior year. The four-year starter finished his career at Penn State as the school’s all-time steals leader.

Scouting Report: Reaves possesses the defensive instincts, size and skill to become an exceptional perimeter defender at the next level. Offensively, he shot above 35% from deep in each of his final two seasons at Penn State and can shoot on the move, or off the catch. This valuable combination of skills in today’s NBA climate projects Reaves to be a natural 3&D with upside as a play-maker off pick-and-rolls, or in isolation.

Organizational Fit: Reaves will give Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle even more room to spread the floor on offense with his ability to knock down open shots and create offense in isolation. The former Nittany Lion can help create space for Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis without needing the ball in his hands for an extended amount of time. His elite defense and motor won’t hurt his pitch to earn playing time with Dallas.
