College Breakdown: Yante Maten was a four-year player at the University of Georgia, where he averaged 19.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game during his senior campaign. Maten earned All-SEC First Team honors after finishing 1st in points per game and 3rd in rebounds per game in the conference during the 2017-2018 season. He finished his SEC career with the 9th-highest player efficiency rating in league history and notched 30 total double-doubles during his time in Athens. Maten shot 48.3 percent from the field and 40.3 percent from beyond the arc in his four seasons at Georgia.
Scouting Report: Yante Maten projects to be a power forward in the NBA with the ability to step out of the paint and stretch the floor. While most of Maten’s offense comes in the low-post, where he’s excellent at muscling his way to the rim and cleaning up offensive boards, Maten worked hard during his senior year at Georgia to develop a 3-point shot. Maten uses his wide frame and strength to gain position for rebounds on the offensive and defensive end of the floor and can guard bigger players due to a combination of his athleticism and physical measurables. He’s an above-average shot blocker, with most of his swats coming on-the-ball instead of off-the-ball. Maten can anchor a defense in the paint and make his presence known early in the contest .
Organizational Fit: Maten will join the Miami Heat organization, spending time in Sioux Falls with the Skyforce. Sioux Falls ranked 17th last season in rebounds per game and will feel Maten’s impact on the boards immediately. The Skyforce have an excellent track record of developing players and sending them to the NBA. Past Gatorade Call-Ups from Sioux Falls include Briante Weber, Okaro White, Henry Walker, Larry Drew II and Tyler Johnson.
