Raptors 905 (4-8), the NBA G League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors dropped the first of two matches against the Grand Rapids Gold (7-4) 115-109 Wednesday afternoon. Javon Freeman-Liberty paced the 905 with a game-high 37 points, four rebounds, five assists, and a block. Denver Nuggets’ two-way player Collin Gillespie led the Gold with a 36-point, 11-rebound, 12-assist performance.
It was a tale of two quarters in the first half as the 905 opened the ball game on a 15-4 run before the Gold responded with 10 straight points. A series of turnovers and missed shots allowed the 905 to close out the quarter on a 13-2 run, taking a 1-point advantage into the second. The Gold quickly found their rhythm in the second quarter as they went on to outscore the 905 31-18, taking their first lead of the game.
The 905 and Gold traded baskets throughout the third quarter, however, the 905 could edge out Grand Rapids and tie the ball game at 78 points apiece. Freeman-Liberty scored 18 of his 37 points in the third quarter. The two teams went back-and-forth in the final frame, but 12 fourth-quarter points from both Gillespie and Braxton Key led the Gold to victory.
Raptors 905 received complementary scoring from Mouhamadou Gueye who added 17 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks in the match. Nuggets’ two-way player Braxton Key contributed 30 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and three blocks in the victory.
The two teams meet again Saturday afternoon to close out their season series, tip-off slated for 2:00 p.m.
