Mexico City Lands Mason Jones, Iowa Gets Phillip Wheeler In Three-Team Trade

EL SEGUNDO – The South Bay Lakers executed a three-team trade and have acquired a 2023 first round pick, a 2023 second round pick, and the returning player rights to Jordan Howard from the Mexico City Capitanes, and a 2023 first round pick from the Iowa Wolves. In exchange, Mexico City will receive the returning player rights to Mason Jones, it was announced today.
Howard (5’11”, 180) appeared in 14 NBA G League Showcase Cup games with Mexico City during the 2021-22 season, averaging 15.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 28.4 minutes per game while shooting 46.0 percent from 3-point range. Howard also suited up for the Lakers during the 2019 Summer League campaign.
In 28 games (all starts) with South Bay last season, Jones averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.6 steals in 37.2 minutes per contest. The Arkansas native was named to the 2021-22 All-NBA G League First Team.
Wheeler, 6-8, appeared in eight NBA G League games last year between Mexico City and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. During the 2021-22 season, he played in 32 games for the Quebradillas Pirates in the Puerto Rico BSN, averaging 16.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game
South Bay now has five total picks in next year’s NBA G League Draft, including four in the first round.
