Best Games To Watch This Week: Feb. 26
Joe DiProsperos /February 26, 2023
It’s Sunday, which means there’s another full week of G League action on tap!
As always, there’s plenty to look forward to over the next few days. That includes some intriguing individual matchups, clashes of different styles of play, and a whole lot more.
Here are some of the games that are absolutely worth checking out.
Ontario Clippers v. Mexico City Capitanes (Feb. 27 at 9 pm/et on NBAGLeague.com)
It’ll be interesting to see how the Clippers’ sixth-ranked defense fares against Mexico City’s high-powered backcourt. Mason Jones and Rigoberto Mendoza have both been playing at a very high level, with Jones currently second in the league in scoring at 25.5 points per game while Mendoza (15.8 PTS, 6.2 REB) has also provided major contributions. Meanwhile, Xavier Moon (he plays among the stars) continues to wreak havoc on defense for Ontario, ranking ninth in total steals this season (34) while also averaging a block per game.
Grand Rapids Gold v. Memphis Hustle (Feb. 28 at 8 pm/et on NBA TV)
Grand Rapids big man Grant Golden has been putting together a supremely impressive regular season thus far. The only eligible player in the G averaging at least 19 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists, he’s logged double-doubles in 14 of the 21 games he’s played in. That includes the triple-double he posted back on Jan. 2, one of just 10 that have occurred during the regular season. He’ll be going up against an equally productive big in Kenneth Lofton Jr., who continues to be at the forefront of the Hustle’s sixth-ranked offense.
Maine Celtics v. South Bay Lakers (March 2 at 10 pm/et on ESPN+)
Speaking of offense, the teams with the league’s two best offensive ratings are set to square off on the West Coast. Maine continues to shoot the ball at an extremely high level from deep, averaging the most three-point makes per game (15.5) on the league’s second-most attempts per game (41.1) while converting them at the fifth-best rate (37.7%). On the other hand, while South Bay’s elite offense is already impressive enough, they’re also currently third in defensive rating, making them the only team in the league with top three rankings in both categories.
Cleveland Charge v. Santa Cruz Warriors (March 4 at 3:30 pm/et on NBAGLeague.com)
These teams have found success by following two very different formulas. Cleveland finds itself very much in playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference on the strength of its third-ranked defense. On top of forcing the fifth-most turnovers per game in the G (17.5), opponents are shooting just 33.5% from three-point range against the Charge. On the other hand, Santa Cruz’s top-five offense makes the second-most threes per game (14.9), which they convert at the third-best rate in the league (37.8%).
