BOSTON, MA – The Boston Celtics announced today that the team has acquired guard RJ Luis Jr. from the Utah Jazz in exchange for forward Georges Niang and two future second-round picks.
Luis Jr., a 6’7” guard, was named 2024-25 Big East Player of the Year after averaging 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.4 steals in 35 games (32 starts) for St. John’s last season. The 22-year-old led the Red Storm to their first outright regular season conference title in 40 years and first tournament championship in 25 years as he was awarded Big East Tournament MVP. Luis Jr. was one of two players to rank top five in the Big East in both scoring and rebounding last season.
The Miami, Fla., native appeared in 85 collegiate games (52 starts) across three seasons at St. John’s (2023-25) and University of Massachusetts (2022-23), posting career averages of 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in 26.0 minutes per game. Luis Jr. was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team his freshman year and earned conference Rookie of the Week honors three times.
Niang was originally acquired by Boston via a trade with Atlanta on July 7.
