Delaware Blue Coats Select Shamorie Ponds With First Pick Of 2021-22 NBA G League Draft

NEW YORK, Oct. 23, 2021 – The Delaware Blue Coats selected Shamorie Ponds (6-0, 175, St. John’s) with the first overall pick of the 2021-22 NBA G League Draft on Saturday afternoon, which was held virtually. The Blue Coats acquired the first overall pick from the South Bay Lakers in a three-team trade earlier this month involving the Memphis Hustle. In 2020-21, Ponds played 5 games with OKK Spars Sarajevo of the Bosnian Premijer Liga BiH, where he averaged 6.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists. The Brooklyn-native appeared in 4 games with the Toronto Raptors during the 2019-20 NBA season, and played 18 games with Raptors 905 during the same year, averaging 14.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists for the Toronto affiliate. The College Park Skyhawks drafted Tyler Hagedorn (6-10, 230, South Dakota) with the second overall pick in the draft. The Fort Wayne Mad Ants selected Gabe York (6-3, 190, Arizona) with the third overall selection. The Westchester Knicks drafted Justin Turner (6-4, 205, Bowling Green) with the fourth overall pick and the Agua Caliente Clippers picked Nate Darling (6-6, 200, Delaware) with the fifth overall selection. The Sioux Falls Skyforce selected Brandon Knight (6-2, 182, Kentucky) with the sixth overall pick. Knight, who was named to the 2011-12 NBA All-Rookie First Team, last played in the NBA for the Detroit Pistons during the 2019-20 season. Zaire Wade (6-3, 170), son of 13-time NBA All-Star Dwyane Wade, was selected 10th overall by the Salt Lake City Stars. Lance Stephenson (6-5, 210, Cincinnati) was drafted 13th overall by the Grand Rapids Gold. The nine-year NBA veteran last played in the league during the 2018-19 season with the Los Angeles Lakers and spent the 2019-20 season with the Liaoning Flying Leopards of the Chinese Basketball Association. The Greensboro Swarm selected LiAngelo Ball (6-5, 215, UCLA) with the 14th overall pick. Ball, the brother of Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball and Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball, most recently played for Charlotte during the 2021 NBA Summer League. Former Indiana Pacers guard Joe Young (6-2, 182, Oregon) was drafted 21st overall by the Stockton Kings. Young was the 43rd pick of the 2015 NBA Draft and most recently played for the Beijing Royal Fighters of the Chinese Basketball Association. Stockton also selected Princepal Singh (6-9, 221, NBA G League Ignite) with the 61st overall pick in the draft.
